English Football Updates: Hannibal Suspended for Spitting; Guardiola Says 'Back Line Has to Get Better'
From the world of top-flight updates, a significant player was issued a substantial suspension, a manager has singled out a defender's errors to prove a point, and the Manchester City manager has called for backline betterment following a wild victory.
1. Mejbri Issued Four-Game Ban and Fine
The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri was issued a four-match suspension and a financial penalty following misconduct in a recent match versus Leeds United. The Football Association said Mejbri was referred a separate disciplinary panel following an incident where he spat in the direction of visiting supporters at the 67th mark of a 2-0 win by Burnley.
An FA release explained: “An independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri for his actions in the Premier League game with Leeds on 18 October. The charge was that the player acted against the laws of football or in a poor way by using abusive and unacceptable conduct by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United fans.”
The statement added, “Mejbri subsequently accepted the allegation, with the panel handing down a four-match suspension and a fine after a hearing. The panel's full explanation for its decisions are to be released in due course.” The team, currently in 19th place in the Premier League standings, visit 12th-place Newcastle on Saturday.
Maresca Singles Out Adarabioyo's Mistakes to Make an Argument
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of seasoned players is no a problem at club, pointing out how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not stop the 28-year-old from playing a bad game during the loss to Leeds United.
Maresca, who oversees the most youthful squad in the division, rejected the idea that mentality was a factor in their setback. He made his case by singling out Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced outfield player on the pitch, who delivered an error-strewn display at the back.
“We always mention experience after we drop points,” Maresca stated. “After we defeated Barcelona, the draw against Arsenal, nobody was talking about older players. I understand that if we lose, we are always looking for the reason why, but in my view the reason why we didn’t win against Leeds is not because of inexperience, it’s because we just weren't good enough.”
Maresca continued, “Who was the most senior player on our team on the pitch? It was Tosin. Was he any good? Therefore, it’s not about experience. It’s about those 11 men, they were not good enough.”
Guardiola Insists Defence 'Has to Get Better'
Pep Guardiola has stated the champions have learnt from their midweek thriller at Fulham with the game has now been forgotten. City held on to claim a 5-4 win in a remarkable clash at Craven Cottage, after leading 5-1 with almost an hour played.
Coming after they resisted a fightback to win 3-2 in the prior game, it raised further doubts about if City are resilient enough to sustain a title challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “That game is behind us,” Guardiola commented. “Valuable learnings, hopefully. In the Premier League, for every team, you have to learn from both good and bad in the good things and bad things and focus on the next one.”
“Naturally I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to analyse what happened, to not concede the goals. With the three goals scored by Leeds, and the five against Fulham it shows our sides, right? Therefore, always done many positive things. But the number of attempts had Leeds have? Three? They scored two. That ratio is bad. How many attempts did Fulham have? Five, six? So, our ratio of chances conceded is is high. We must be better.”
Newcastle Prioritise on Livramento and Botman Deals
Newcastle United's new sporting director, Ross Wilson, has placed new deal discussions involving important backline players Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his agenda at St James’ Park. Wilson joined after leaving Nottingham Forest recently and was pleased to learn midfielder Sandro Tonali is on a deal that runs until 2029 with an option until 2030.
This allows Wilson to focus on negotiations for Livramento and Botman's representatives. Livramento's agreement ending in 2027 and the latter’s in 2028, Newcastle's talks have assumed a certain importance.
“My first three or four days in the job is when I found that Sandro’s contract situation was significantly more secure than I had thought,” said Wilson. “However, it is well known that we wishes to renew Tino’s contract and also wants to renew Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are ongoing.”
Manager Eddie Howe is without Botman against the home game with Burnley on Saturday, and he likely to remain out for at least another week.
5. Nuno Says Paquetá Will Start for West Ham
The Hammers' head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup when the side play Brighton this Sunday, having completed his suspension for the sending-off he received Liverpool.
“It is behind us,” Nuno said. “I am positive it won't happen again because he himself acknowledged the error. We spoke about it internally. I believe the matter is closed and will not happen again.”
He also understands the significant strain facing his team, who are 18th before Saturday's fixtures. “We cannot ignore it,” he admitted. “It is the situation. We must face it. We are battling for our top-flight status. We can't hide it.”
Arteta Impressed by No 9 Stand-in Merino
Mikel Merino could continue leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward even when their regular frontmen return from injury. The midfielder has been playing as a makeshift number nine due to fitness issues for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Merino found the net for the opener against Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for their second in a 2-0 win which preserved {their|
