Exceptional Crimson Electrical Discharge Recorded in the Heavens

A group of photographers based in the island nation have successfully captured visual evidence of crimson flashes, among the most elusive light phenomena on Earth, in which bright red bursts become visible in the sky.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

This group of artists initially planned to capture the galactic core over the distinctive clay formations in the South Island of the country on a specific autumn evening, before encountering the extraordinary event.

They thought they would be fortunate to get clear skies that after-dark period, but their expedition transformed into “an unforgettable one,” one photographer remarked.

“He was checking his files for a stellar landscape and realized he had photographed crimson electrical bursts,” the photographer noted. “We just could not believe it – it resulted in joyful noises and all sorts going on in the darkness.”

Understanding Red Sprites

Red sprites are atmospheric energy releases in the higher atmospheric layers, caused by storm systems. Differing from conventional electrical strikes that shoots towards the surface, these events propel upward towards the upper atmosphere, producing appearances that look like vertical forms, root vegetables or even jellyfish. The first photograph of a such an event was captured – by chance – in the late eighties, by a team at the a academic organization.

Momentary and Dreamlike Sightings

The phenomena last for such a short time – persisting for a mere instant – that they are infrequently observed to the naked eye, but a team member got lucky. “I was coincidentally viewing directly at one when it took place – just a perfect coincidence looking at the appropriate section of the firmament and I observed a short crimson illumination,” he said.

Seeing the phenomena was a dream for the photographer, an acclaimed dark sky artist. “It appears as if you witness something that is not real, it’s very ethereal … the color is a profound crimson that is present only momentarily, so it is fascinating to observe.”

Technical and Artistic Mastery

Photographing a red sprite requires a mastery of technical photography, as well as an knowledge about scientific principles and creative flare, he stated. “It is a deeply engaging type of photography that’s highly fulfilling as well.”

Another photographer said it was counted as the “most incredible evenings” of his career. “I could see the starry river glowing above the horizon while these massive crimson strands of light danced above a storm at a great distance,” he explained.

A One-of-a-Kind Photographic Achievement

As far as he knows, there are no additional photographs capturing scarlet electrical bursts and the galactic core from the southern perspective in one frame.

“It was one of those moments when you realize you are seeing something you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
