The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that came after his disputed online comments about the conservative activist.

The vote against the student leader achieved the required super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.

Disputed Comments

The dispute began after the student reportedly posted messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while addressing a college in Utah.

According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.

The student leader is also reported to have posted in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.

Election Results

The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with outcomes announced on this week.

Society announcements showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.

The announcement stated that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Procedural Disputes

Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.

In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the vote tally had been halted because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His response categorically refuted that any representative acting for George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The president-elect stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as president-elect.

His statement added that he was "proud and thankful to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have said that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Reactions

On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an open letter to the Oxford Union on a related program broadcast.

The message criticized the union of becoming a institution where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a ideological rival".

The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".

The society had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with Kirk at the society in May.
