United Kingdom Broadens Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Warning Roster with Eleven Nations

Toxic substance warning sign

The UK Foreign Office has added eleven more countries to its travel warning roster regarding the dangers of methanol contamination from contaminated beverages.

The revised advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Only recently, the government had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, following a number of high-profile events like the fatal death of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that as little as minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause vision loss or death within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous chemical often used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not designed for drinking.

While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of beverages, reputable manufacturers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the purification method.

Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Government Advice for Travelers

Foreign Office representative the minister said that each tourist should be aware of the indicators of methanol contamination.

"When you are consuming alcohol abroad, opt for well-known venues and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," Falconer advised.

"If something appears suspicious, such as a headache that's far more intense than typical or blurred eyesight – get medical help fast."

The full list of countries listed as posing a risk of methanol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
